Japan Supports Health and Education in Lango
The health and education sectors of Lango sub region have received donations from the Embassy of Japan in Uganda. The projects of 166,909 US Dollars (about 349 million Uganda shillings) were signed between the Embassy of Japan and Pope John’s Hospital Aber in Oyam district and Awiri Primary School in Dokolo district.
An outpatientsblock has been constructed in Pope John’s Hospital Aber with emphasis placed on the maternal and child health departments. The existing outpatientsblock had become too dilapidated and small to handle the increasing number of patientscausing the lack of privacy for the patients. The new outpatients block will provide more space to better serve the patients.Meanwhile,a classroom block has been constructed in Awiri Primary School with an administration office and furniture to benefit1,064 children.
H. E. Kazuo Minagawa, Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, officiated the handover that took place at the school and the hospital respectively. “With peace returned to the region, we deem education as an important basis for early reconstruction and development of the region,” he said. He further noted that many of maternal deaths are attributed to their having no access to professional health services, hence Japan would continue to support improving the education and health sectors in Uganda.
The donation by Japan this time is part of the GGP scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community development projects to uplift the life of grassroots people. So far, 147 projects have been funded under the scheme in Uganda since its inception in Uganda in 1992.
Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with African countries through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidating peace and good governance in Africa.
